Our Guide to At-Home LED Light Therapy

Our Guide to At-Home LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy has become one of our favourite ways to support the skin between professional treatments — and when it comes to at-home devices, consistency is everything.

At the clinic, we use LED light therapy as part of many of our treatment protocols because of its ability to support the skin without adding unnecessary stress or downtime. Bringing that technology home can be a beautiful extension of your professional treatment plan — provided you choose a quality device and, most importantly, actually use it consistently.

Why LED Light Therapy?

LED, or light-emitting diode therapy, uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with the skin and support different cellular processes.

Depending on the wavelength, LED can be used to support skin concerns including visible signs of ageing, inflammation, redness and blemish-prone skin.

It isn’t an overnight fix — and that’s exactly why we always talk about consistency rather than quick results.

Think of LED as exercise for your skin. One session is lovely, but the real benefits come from making it part of your routine.

Our at-home LED guide

One of the devices we particularly love is the Therabody LED Light Therapy Mask.

It is one of the stronger at-home LED options on the market, with thoughtful design details that make it much easier to incorporate into everyday life.

We love Therabody LED Mask:

  • Covers the face and lips
  • Incorporates a massage function
  • Uses three different wavelengths (nm) to target different skin needs
  • Is designed to make regular LED use simple and convenient

That last point is important. The best device isn’t necessarily the one with the longest list of features — it’s the one you’ll actually use.

How we recommend using your LED at home

Step 1Double cleanse

Always begin with clean skin.

We recommend a thorough double cleanse to remove makeup, SPF, pollution and any residue that could sit between the light and your skin.

Step 2LED Light Therapy Mask

Use your LED device on clean, dry skin.

For the Therabody device, follow the manufacturer’s recommended treatment time and frequency. For those wanting to maximise consistency, the device can be incorporated into your routine 2–3 times per day, provided you are following the manufacturer’s directions and your skin is tolerating it well.

More isn’t always better — consistency and correct use are what matter.

Step 3Finish with your skincare

Once your LED session is complete, apply your serums and moisturiser.

This is where we like to keep your routine purposeful: use the products prescribed for your skin rather than layering on unnecessary actives.

Your LED device should complement your skincare prescription — not replace it.

Where LED fits into your skin plan

At-home LED works beautifully alongside professional treatments.

We see it as a way of maintaining the skin between your appointments and supporting the work we’re doing in clinic.

Your professional treatments may be doing the heavy lifting when it comes to correction, while consistent home care and LED help create the foundation for healthy, resilient skin.

And, just like skincare, there is no one-size-fits-all LED routine.

Your ideal frequency will depend on your skin, your current home-care prescription and any professional treatments you’re having.

The Sims Twins’ rule: consistency over complexity

If there is one thing we want you to take away from this Skin School, it’s this:

Your skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. It needs to be consistent.

A few minutes of LED incorporated into your daily routine can be far more valuable than buying the latest device and leaving it in the bathroom cupboard.

LED is not a replacement for professional treatments, prescribed skincare or SPF — but used consistently, it can be an incredibly valuable addition to your overall skin strategy.

Skin health isn’t built in one treatment. It’s built through what you do consistently, every day.

The Sims Twins Skin School is our space for sharing the knowledge, treatment philosophy and professional advice we use every day at Gisborne Skin Clinic.
